Bone Producing Protein To Change The Face Of Dentistry

Dental implants are basically artificial tooth roots, that anchor crowns (artificial replacement teeth, or at least, replacements for the visible portion of teeth) to the jawbone of the patient getting them. These prostheses have been invented in the nineteen sixties, and have been one of the medical revolutions of this century. The only problem is that not everyone can get them who can afford them; there needs to be enough bone density in the jawbone to support the dental implant, and the bone needs to be of good quality in order to be able to house the dental implant, porous bones such as those of certain diabetics and of patients suffering from osteoporosis will break from use and cause dental implant failure- a truly terrible and costly thing.


This is why most of the research that is going on around dental implants focuses on ways to make this technology accessible for everyone. This of course is not driven purely out of brotherly love,a s a larger customer base means more money, but whatever the intentions, these innovations are making sure that more and more people can have dental implants.            

Who Can’t Get Dental Implants? 

People suffering from diabetes cannot get dental implants. People taking bisphosphonate drugs are also not eligible for dental implants, as well as people suffering from osteoporosis, people who smoke or drink alcohol on a regular basis, and people who are addicted to cocaine or methamphetamines, as these types of drugs leach calcium from the bones and teeth, making bones brittle. In old age, bones can also become brittle, so usually clinics will refuse patients above 68 years of age. People who just have thin bone structures are also not eligible for dental implants. 

A New Tactic To Involve Everyone

Recently many different types of tactics that aim to include everyone in the realm of implantable people have arisen. But this one is by far the best. Until now bone grafts have been the prefered method, but these involve the harvesting of bone material or artificial bone material, and an invasive surgery, which is costly and also requires a stable medical condition. This is why they are not popular, and are being replaced. Recently, there has been a breakthrough, as a protein that creates bone matter has been identified. It was identified at Georgia Health Sciences University, and has been the subject of much controversy. Humans produce this protein, and it can be recreated, and right now a method is being used to coat implants with this material, to make it so that the dental implant actually creates bone around itself after implantation. The pilot study was launched in March of this year, and the results are eagerly awaited, and once they hit, nothing will be the same ever again.
